21st Century Medical Technology – Innovations in the Minimally Invasive Treatment of Widespread Diseases

Rising life expectancy, particularly in industrialized Western countries, has caused a massive increase in the incidence of widespread diseases such as cancer, stroke and heart attack. The STIMULATE Research Campus is developing new, image-based, minimally invasive and gentle treatment procedures for these diseases, and avoid a cost explosion in the healthcare system.

Technologies that are still being developed in specialist laboratories will in future become a natural part of day-to-day medical and hospital care and eventually even be used in the patient’s own home.

Long-term cooperation between partners from science and industry facilitates activities along the entire value chain – from the initial research finding to a commercial product. Companies benefit from their proximity to the university and the university hospital as well as from contacts with skilled staff and end users (clinicians). The research campus is highly successful in bringing together medical know-how, for example in the area of minimally invasive instruments, interventional imaging and navigation technology. This pooling of expertise in various fields acts as a multiplier and provides the companies involved (in particular SMEs) with opportunities to join forces and exploit new markets. Close cooperation with industry enables the academic partners in the project to gain insights into development work and technological processes within companies and to thus expand and strengthen existing expertise in medical technology.

The research campus in Magdeburg is a joint venture involving the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, Siemens Healthcare GmbH and STIMULATE e.V., an association of partners from science and industry. In order to make even more intensive use of synergies in the future, a science campus is currently being developed in the Magdeburg port district with STIMULATE at its centre and the industrial partners in close proximity. This is an important milestone in the establishment of a “German Centre for Image-Guided Medicine”.

Researchers at STIMULATE are using a robot-based C-arm X-ray system.
