Mobility2Grid
The Mobility2Grid Research Campus

Promoting renewable energy and e-mobility in interconnected urban areas

The transformation of the energy system is closely intertwined with the transformation of the transport system and largely depends on demand-based utilization strategies and public acceptance of new technologies. The Mobility2Grid Research Campus is addressing these issues by studying the integration of decentralized grid, information and transport structures in urban areas. Public institutions, networks and civil society are involved from the very start.

The partners in the research campus are looking into technology options in seven different fields such as virtual power plants or vehicle-to-grid (V2G) energy storage systems for electric vehicles. However, the research campus is more than a mere platform and laboratory for researching and testing mobility and energy supply technologies. Unlike research that is done exclusively in the lab, Mobility2Grid features a “real-world laboratory” where novel energy and mobility systems are tested as to whether they are ready for regular operation. Operational and supply safety plays an important role in this context, with regard to both societal transformation processes and commercialization. In the future Mobility2Grid will contribute to the successful transformation of the energy system while at the same time providing enabling conditions for the use of electric road vehicles in both commercial and private contexts.

One of the main characteristics of the Mobility2Grid Research Campus is its large number of diverse partners from many disciplines. A total of around 40 different institutions and companies are involved in the Mobility2Grid real-world laboratory on the EUREF site. Five faculties of the TU Berlin cooperate with other research organisations. Industry is also actively involved in the research campus, with large companies as well as SMEs and start-ups. Public institutions such as the municipal utility companies and umbrella networks are equally involved.

The EUREF site in Berlin-Schöneberg offers a unique infrastructure mix with diverse sources of renewable energy and a Micro Smart Grid. This makes it possible to integrate charging infrastructures for electric vehicles into a smart grid and test them in a real-world environment.

Mobilitiy2Grid Research Campus

This flyer is about the Mobilitiy2Grid Research Campus in Berlin. It is one of nine inserts that complement the brochure entitled “Research Campus Funding Initiative”. The Mobilitiy2Grid Research Campus makes use of its “real-world laboratory” to conduct research on energy and transport systems in order to ensure the successful transformation of our energy system. Its aim is to create enabling conditions that support the use of electric road vehicles.
