The efficient and sustainable transformation of our energy systems requires the development of innovative technologies for the electricity grids of the future. These must be able to handle large shares of energy from renewable and decentralized sources. The Flexible Electrical Networks Research Campus (FEN Research Campus for short) is addressing precisely this challenge and is thus making a major contribution towards a sustainable, reliable and affordable energy supply.
The FEN Research Campus is a partnership involving a number of institutes of RWTH Aachen University as well as national and international partners from different sectors of industry. Their transdisciplinary research focuses on the development and integration of direct current (DC) technologies. The university institutes and companies have joined forces to do research on the enabling technologies, such as high-efficient DC‑DC converters for the medium voltage distribution grids. Their research interests range from grid planning and operation to automation and control, standards and norms, cloud platforms for smart energy services, components and power electronics. In addition to technological issues, the research campus also addresses societal acceptance as well as biological, ecological, urban development and economic aspects.
The industrial partners are translating the research results into innovative products and services. Moreover, the research campus is actively involved in international exchange programmes and offers initial and continuing training opportunities for students through lectures and project work at RWTH Aachen University.
This research cooperation involving partners from both science and industry under one roof of the FEN Think Tank on the RWTH Aachen University Campus Melaten enables a direct and intensive transfer of knowledge. Moreover, the location of the Research Campus in Aachen in the border region between Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium is perfect for making its work known to other European Member States.
