Societal change and the use of novel technologies and services are global challenges that require new solutions. This applies in particular to areas such as energy, health and mobility. The technical and economic processes in these areas are becoming increasingly complex and thus harder to understand and control. The MODAL Research Campus uses mathematical models to address this challenge.
The research campus researches innovative mathematical solutions in particular by devising processes for extracting information from large amounts of data and for generating realistic models for complex processes. This will lead to the development of new process optimization and decision support systems for industry and politics. The research campus is thus laying the foundations for developing new kinds of services.
The innovation partnership between academia and industry comprises two scientific partners, namely the Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) and the Freie Universität Berlin (FUB), as well as a broad range of industrial partners (SMEs and large companies) from various sectors. The science partners contribute their expertise and provide the infrastructure while their partners from industry offer their perspectives as users dealing with genuine user problems and share real data and software licences.
The research campus attaches strong importance to a good mix of both experienced and early-career researchers. MODAL’s policy is to give all staff the opportunity to learn more about diverse career paths including the classical academic career, a career in industrial R&D or the establishment of a spin-off company. Initial and continuing training, gender equality and internationalization are further important aspects at the MODAL Research Campus.
Staff members of all the partners are working under one roof at the ZIB, which is located on the campus of the FUB in Berlin-Dahlem. This close physical proximity brings together different ways of thinking and working and thus creates an innovative environment where researchers use the industrial partner’s real data to test mathematical methods.
MODAL Research Campus
This flyer is about the MODAL Research Campus in Berlin. It is one of nine inserts that complement the brochure entitled “Research Campus Funding Initiative”. The MODAL Research Campus is developing techniques to extract information from big data and develop realistic models for complex processes. With this the research campus supports the development of new solutions in areas such as energy, health and mobility.
