MODAL Research Campus in the Excellence Strategy

The MATH+ excellence cluster proposal of the Berlin mathematics community has been approved for funding under the German Excellence Strategy. The MODAL Research Campus provides a platform for all the cooperation projects between science and business under MATH+. In this way, MATH+ will benefit from the broad experience and cooperation culture of the research campus.

The MATH+ Berlin Mathematics Research Center is a cross-institutional and transdisciplinary cluster of excellence where researchers will explore and further develop new approaches in application-oriented mathematics. It makes clear that excellence research and transfer orientation can also complement each other in mathematics. Emphasis is placed on mathematical principles for using even larger amounts of data in life and material sciences, in energy and network research, and in the humanities and social sciences. The aim is to boost not only scientific progress but also technological innovation and the comprehensive understanding of social processes. MATH+ is a joint project of the three major universities in Berlin – Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Technische Universität Berlin – and integrates, both conceptually and structurally, the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics and the Zuse Institute Berlin. It continues the success stories of the renowned MATHEON Research Center and of the Berlin Mathematical School, which has been supported by the Excellence Initiative since 2006.

In addition to research units focusing on fundamental issues, MATH+ will establish transfer units to bring research results to industry and society, particularly by developing prototypes or demonstrators. The transfer units will be integrated into the MODAL Research Campus where they will benefit from the extensive experience gathered and cooperation networks established. The MODAL environment will be accessible to the entire MATH+ community as a platform for transfer to industry. It offers researchers best practice guidance for cooperation agreements or for splitting projects into a research and a product development component (mostly professional software) so that the latter part can be outsourced, e.g. via the MODAL AG. Cooperation between MATH+ and MODAL is aimed at supporting the quick translation of results from excellent basic mathematical research into industrial application. Together MODAL and MATH+ will be international leaders in this field.
